Funeral Arrangements and Burial

In 1976 The Dublin Islamic Society bought a small separate plot in Mount Jerome cemetery in the south central area of Dublin for burying deceased Muslims. By the end of the 1980's the Muslim plot in Mount Jerome became full. This prompted the Islamic Foundation of Ireland to search for another place.

In 1990 the present Muslim section in Newcastle cemetery in the south of Dublin was obtained by a special agreement with the South Dublin City Council. In the absence of a Muslim undertaker in Dublin or a Muslim office for funeral services, due to the small size of the community, the staff of the Islamic Foundation of Ireland carry out the funeral arrangements. These include washing and shrouding the deceased and burial in the Muslim graveyard.

Since 1990 Muslim burial is in Newcastle cemetery in the South of Dublin was obtained by a special agreement with the South Dublin city council. Islamic Foundation of Ireland carry out the funeral arrangements. These include washing and shrouding the deceased and burial in the Muslim graveyard. Funeral prayer for the deceased is performed at the Mosque prior to the burial. Arrangements can also be made for transporting the body of deceased abroad if the family so wishes. The cost of purchasing a grave in the Muslim section of Newcastle burial ground has increased. The new charges for a grave space are as follows:

An infant grave space: €100.

Adult grave space: €1,520.

This amount is paid to the South Dublin city council. In addition, the gravedigger charges €150, for a child’s grave and €450, for an adult’s grave.

If the family of deceased were to use an undertaker the charges would include the above plus the costs of removing the body from the hospital and a hearse for carrying the coffin to the Mosque and from there to the cemetery.
